I left my regular fulltime job as computer programmer 25 yrs ago when my first child was born. I wanted to work part-time so I set myself up as a consultant and have contracted my time out since then. Two years ago I was trained in SAP and when my contract expired I went ahead and accepted a fulltime position. My goal was to firm up my SAP skills and then consider going back to contracting since the money is so much better – (I took a $100,000 pay cut to take fulltime regular job). But the additional problem is that I am now 50 yrs old – maybe it would be smarter to stay as a employee – I don’t look my age but age is going to become an issue with employers – even getting jobs as consultant will be harder now. So should I keep my regular full time job – or is SAP so hot that I can get any job I want and might as well get the great consultant money while I can?

Don’t get me wrong, I have seen confident people in 3rd world countries, but they are exceptional people who stand out from the crowd. In places like Norway, the UK, Switzerland, the US (every time less to be honest) confident, go getter people is common. They take good care of them selves, take risks, have goals, have social skills?

I have read some ’self-help’ books on goal setting, confidence, social skills, etc and I have noticed that people from 1st world countries lives the way it is advised in those books but on an unconscious level, as if they had been trained like that from generation in generation.

Scott… can you please explain what makes me an idiot? how old are you?
to chelsea… i think we agree in some parts but not so much about others… I have noticed image problems only in the US (generally speaking) and in othr places like Europe its only a few people with those kind of issues. I even noticed it was considered of bad taste talking or making jokes bout fat/ugly people… I had the deepest, interesting conversations with 1st or 2nd world countries… and I repeat, I dont mean that 3rd world countries people are empty or stupid…

besides, my question was not only oriented towards self image but to: goal setting, confidence, etc
