how can you help make chores fun for kids?

summer dawn asked:

my kids are both under 10 but over 5 and getting them to do chores is like pulling teeth.. even an allowance doesnt work.. any ideas on this one lol??
i pay them 5 bucks a week which averages out to about 20 bucks each a month .. given their ages thats a sweet deal.. isnt it?

Watch supernanny, they show all kinds of fun ways to get kids to do chores, like making a fun chart- rewarding them with fun things they like to do, candy, or see who can get the most stickers, more money ect.

Hm. Perhaps make a star chart or something? Every time they fill out a chart every day of the week with a certain chore they have done, they get to choose where the family goes at the end of the week, or get a new toy… or something like that. I heard about that on Super Nanny, and it seems to generally work pretty well. You can spice it up a little as well. Draw names out of a hat to see who gets what chores for the week, etc.

I Agree with Kimmeh, when i was younger, my mom made a start chore chart thing, and when the end of the week came around, if i had ALL my starts… I’d get to choose either a movie night or go out for ice cream!!

Maybe when you want them to clean there room you could tell them that you hid something in there but they have to clean to get it. BUT you don’t put it in there before they clean you sneak it in while they are and if they don’t finish you take it away. I don’t know about any other chores.

I was the same way at that age, money didn’t even matter to me. I just didn’t want to do it. Compromise with them. Maybe at that age, money doesn’t matter because it’s not like they can drive themselves to the mall and spend it. Offer them, things like fries from Mcdonald’s twice a week or something that they’ll be interested in. You have a few more years before money will interest them! :)
